Knots (2017 - 2020)
The pieces that make up this series act as an exploration of the outer limits of a photographic practice. I made these pieces by twisting up long thin strips of photographic paper and exposing them using a flashlight. Each knot projects a shadow of itself onto the paper, forming a recording of its own creation. These pieces are presented as tangles, losing even more reference to the traditional photographic form by becoming loose, messy paper sculptures. While these works maintain my focus on the conceptual underpinnings of photographic representation, they also deal with the exploration of anxiety, my ongoing questions about sexual identity, and the complicated nature of non-traditional relationship structures.
